Church Bells
Church
bells have become a common fixture to a lot of towns throughout the world. They originally made their impression on culture
as we know it during the middle ages in Europe. The first recorded use of church bells was in Italy, in the fifth century.
The first church bells were designed to inform citizens of when it was time to worship. They generated a remarkable tone
that could captivate ears in a widespread area. Because they were so effective at catching the attention of the townspeople,
their duties quickly evolved from simply being beautifully sounding instruments to a way of alerting citizens of the time,
of emergencies and of special occasions. In fact, informing citizens of danger was a responsibility that church bells carried
into the 20th century. During World War II in Great Britain, all of the church bells in the country were not allowed to
ring, unless it was to inform citizens that there were enemy troops invading.

Church bells also represented the status of the parish that purchased them. If a church had a lot of followers or enough of a percentage of wealthy followers that made frequent donations, the church bells they would feature in their towers would be decorated more lavishly. They would be accented with gold and polished to look as beautiful as they sounded. These luxurious bells would be placed in open towers and put on display, so that any visitors could see how stunning they were.
The size of the
church bells that were created for a town also was determined by the size of the town. Towns that were spread out over
a larger area needed bigger church bells and taller bell towers, because they needed to be able to be heard from further
away. Larger bells would create deeper tones that would resonate all through the town, even reaching citizens who lived
on the very outskirts.
